Today in class we learned more about "A Message to Garcia". The essay was published in March of 1899 and 40 million copies were published. "A Message to Garcia" was published as an inspirational essay and recieved a lot postivie feedback, so much in fact that it was made into two movies. The message of the essay is to take initiative and to be independent. The essay also focuses on arete, or excellence, which means to to live to your full potential. Rowan, the main character in "A Message to Garcia" excels in delivering President Mckinley's letter to Garcia, and displays arete in doing so. We also reviewed vocabulary that is featured in "A Message to Garicia". Some of the words we went over were perihelen, which is the point when a planet is closest to the sun and the brightest, stenographer, which is a person who writes notes in shorthand, and slipshod, which means careless.
