Terms and Names
Inflation- A decline in the value of money accompanied by the rising price of goods and services
Mercenary- A soldier who is paid to fight in a foreign army
Diocletian- A strong army leader who became emperor of Rome in 284
Constantinople- A Greek city in Turkey originally called Byzantium; Capital of the Roman Empire in 330
Attila- King of the Huns between 434-453 who terrorized the Roman Empire, could not conquer Rome because of famine and disease

Main Ideas
What were the main internal causes of the empire's decline?  
A weak economy, invasions by tribes and pirates, disturbed trade, lack of gold and silver, inflation, disturbed military.
How did Diocletian succeed in preserving the empire?
He doubled the size of the army, set prices for goods, divided the empire into Greek-speaking West and Latin-speaking East
Why did so many Germanic tribes begin to invade the empire?
 The Huns began to destroy Germanic tribes on the border of the empire, therefore, rushing Germanic people into Rome
