Roman Republic Section Assesment
Terms and Names
Republic- a form of government in which power rests with citizens who have the right to vote for their leaders
Patrician- wealthy landowners who held most of the power
Plebeian-
the common people of Rome who were farmers, artisans, and merchants; made up the majority of the population
Tribune- Roman officials chosen by the plebeians to protect their interest
Consul- Rome's two officials
Senate- the aristocratic branch of Rome's government
Dictator- a leader who had absolute power to make laws and command the army
Legion- Roman soldiers were organized into large military units
Punic Wars- war between Rome and Carthage
Hannibal- Carthaginian general
Main Ideas
What limits were there on the power of the Roman consuls?
They could only serve for one year, the same person could not be elected for ten years, and one consul could always overrule the other's decision.
What was the signifcance of the twelve tables?
To ensure that all free citizens had protection under the law, all laws were carved on twelve tablets and hung in a forum
How was Hannibal's attack on Rome daring and different?
