Today in class we talked about the Peters projection. I personally have never been more confused. I cannot believe that this was the first time I've ever heard of this map. This map is an accurate projection of the world based on the sizes of the countries. The map that I see in the back of every classroom is incorrect because it was made for navigation and the sizes are way different, but on the Peters projection countries like Africa and Australia are way larger than I realized. We also learned that there is no reason for the northern hemisphere to be on the top of the map, because it all depends on what angle you are looking at the Earth from. I am still in shock as to how I have just now learned this. I think we should definitely use the Peters projection map because it doesn't seem fair to show countries such as Africa or Mexico as so small because the countries are often seen as poor and small when in reality they have progressive cities and are pretty large too. A lot of people do not teach this map because it wasn't the way they were taught. I think its important to teach the accurate map because a lot of people think that the United States and Europe are very powerful because the associate power with size, but there are countries much bigger than the USA.
