Greek Democracy and Socrates

Today in class we talked about ancient democracy and Socrates. These topics are very relevent today because we use democracy in the United States and because Socrates shaped the way we think today a lot.

Greek Democracy

An agora was a gathering place or assembly for athletic, artistic, spiritual, and political life in the city-states. A polis was the political entities ruled by their body of citizens. The word polis is an origin for words such as politics, metropolitan, and poll. The first recorded time that a leader was overthrown and people revolted against their leaders was in 508 BCE. Since then, lots of countries have also revolted against a leader, one of the most recent ones being in Egypt in 2011.

Socrates

Socrates had worked as a stonemason in his earlier ages. He fought in the Peloponnesian war, and his working-class background and battlefield experience shaped his opinions. Socrates created the scientific method, by asking people their opinions on things and then asking them why they believe that with follow up questions. This often led to people questioning their beliefs and changing their views. Although he is now praised as a great philosopher, he caused large controversies back in his day because he occasionally questioned peoples beliefs in Greek gods.
